I’m Sam Lim, your Member for Tangney.

Kaya and hi – I’m Sam, your Federal Member of Parliament for Tangney.

Thanks for stopping by. I am honoured to be your Federal Representative in Parliament.

I was born in 1961 in Johor, Malaysia to very hardworking parents. I am the oldest of eight children and growing up, my family could not afford electricity or hot water.

My parents never had the opportunity to get an education and so I felt so fortunate to attend school. I studied hard at secondary school, but I could not afford university fees. This is one of the reasons why I am so passionate for education and why I will always advocate for public education.  

I joined the Royal Malaysian Police Force. I then became a dolphin trainer – the best job of my life. 

I believe you learn from every experience. Dolphins are intelligent, cheeky and they can sense our feelings. I also learned about the importance of our environment, biodiversity, water and lands. I was of course sad when the safari park closed, but my heart was warm knowing that the dolphins were wild and free.

I have owned and operated small businesses both in Malaysia and in Perth. My wife, our three children and I migrated to Perth in 2002 and we opened a coffee shop in the CBD. What an adventure!

I have always dreamed of being a police officer and that dream was reignited in 2006 when I joined the WA Police Academy. I have served communities from Eucla to Karratha, and of course Perth.  I have a strong sense of duty and of community. And for those both young and young-at-heart – it is never too late to pursue your dreams.

I cherish my Chinese and Malay heritage – 你好and selamat pagi! – and with my diverse language skills I became a Diversity Engagement Officer with WA Police where I worked with multicultural communities across Perth. With residents from more than 160 nations, I embrace the diversity of Tangney.

In 2020, I was awarded Police Officer of the year for my work with multicultural communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
