About Sam Lim

I’m Sam Lim, your Member for Tangney.
I’m Sam, your Federal Member of Parliament for Tangney.
I was born in 1961 in Johor, Malaysia to very hardworking parents. I am the oldest of eight children and growing up, my family could not afford electricity or hot water.
My parents never had the opportunity to get an education and so I felt so fortunate to attend school. I studied hard at secondary school, but I could not afford university fees. This is one of the reasons why I am so passionate for education and why I will always advocate for public education.
As a child, I always dreamt of being a police officer. I joined the Malaysia police force in 1980, as I always wanted to serve the community and help people. But I was not able to support my family and so two years later I found the best job in my life—dolphin trainer!
Dolphins are so loving and beautiful. They are cheeky and very intelligent. I was with my dolphin friends for four years, before the safari park closed. I was very sad to say goodbye, but I was also happy that they were back in their home, wild and free.
I then owned and operated businesses in Malaysia before my wife, three children and I migrated to Perth in 2002.
As a family we owned and operated a small café in Perth. My dream of being a police officer was reignited in 2006 when I joined the WA Police Academy.
To me, education is everything and my wife and I wanted to give our children the best education and opportunity to secure a comfortable life. My children each received a great education at the public schools in Tangney, and they graduated from their local universities.
I spent more than 15 years in the WA Police Force, serving communities from Eucla to Karratha, and of course Perth, including at the Palmyra Police Station. In 2020, I was awarded Police Officer of the Year for my work with multicultural communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
This work was made possible in part because of the many different languages I speak. I cherish my Chinese and Malay heritage and am proud to embrace the more than 160 different ancestries that are represented in Tangney.
In 2022, I was elected to be your Federal Member for Tangney and it is truly the honour of a lifetime to serve the people and our community. Representing Tangney and delivering for our community is something my team and I work hard at every single day. You can read more about our work here, and follow our progress on Facebook, Instagram. Please contact my office if I can be of assistance.
I am proud to stand, together with Tangney.
